D36
An award-winning building with a lush roof deck designed for communal gardening and social gatherings!
This unconventional infill-project with a custom designed glass façade gave us the opportunity to create innovative fire solutions and efficient living units with ample daylight and high ceilings. The apartment complex is located inside an older urban structure in Oslo’s Dælenenga neighborhood. The building occupies the entire site, which lies in a park that stretches through a collection of old buildings. The amount of space it takes up is solved by reflecting and impersonating its surroundings with a green glass exterior and a wooden ground floor. The façade consists of several glass layers with green ceramic print inspired by the colors of the surrounding historic buildings. The patterns and various layers produce a relief sculpture effect, creating the illusion of looking into a tree canopy. Among other things, the façade also functions as balcony railing and noise shields.
The D36 apartments are compact in size, but have well-designed floor plans that provide ample daylight from several angles and a 2,7 meter ceiling height, giving off the feeling of sufficient space. The roof deck has 0.5 meter plots of soil where the tenants can grow vegetables and/or other flora, and each unit has equal access to the patio. Not only does this layer of soil and vegetation create a lavish common area, but it also contributes to rainfall-management that helps relieve the public stormwater system.
