Kistefos - Infrastructure for Variants
Bridging time
ELEMENT assisted Pierre Huyghe and motorplan Architekten und Ingenieure in designing and engineering the infrastructure for the artist's largest permanent piece thus far. The work of art is
located on an island that has been inaccessible until recently, due to flooding caused by extreme river flow activity. A Corten steel footbridge brings you onto the island and through the forest, taking you on a journey in and throughout Huyghe's universe of simulated and natural processes. Variants was created specifically for Kistefos, and is the most ambitious piece in the sculpture park
to date.
Pierre Huyghe on the piece: "Scanned forest, simulation in real time, generated mutations and sounds, intelligent camera, climate sensors, animals, plants, micro-organisms and materialized metamorphosis: both from synthetic and biological material. Variants are a multipolar entity that perceives, generates and modifies. It is an island, while at the same time being the island it could be in an alternate reality.”
