SINTEFPARKEN
The new facade with super windows, daylight reflectors, solar cells and no external sun shading challenges the norms for standard facade rehabilitation. Continuous use during the entire construction period!
SINTEF's buildings from the 1950s needed an upgrade, initially a rehabilitation of the facades. The aim was to upgrade the outdated and poorly performing facades, while maintaining daily use of the buildings. In the new facade concept, the window formats are "enlarged" using an innovative outer window frame, so that both daylight and the experienced view are enhanced. Aluminum reflectors have been installed in the funnel-shaped window recess, which brings daylight further into the offices. In the evening, LED lights in the window frame replace the natural light, and the effect is a need-based daylight experience throughout the day and the dark seasons. The new facade provides significantly improved UCV values (total U-value for both window and wall), while exceeding the requirements for daylight factor.
Screens on the gables and roof function as railings and hide the technical infrastructure that facilitates research work and laboratory activities. The new facade functions both as a new face for SINTEF and as an energy measure, with solar cells elegantly integrated into the facade design. The facade provides an energy saving of over 50%, an improved indoor climate, better daylight conditions and visibility, and greater flexibility in the office premises.
By encapsulating the building in a new facade, the lifespan of the 1950s building mass has been extended into the future. The rehabilitation has also produced a significantly lower CO2 footprint compared to standard post-insulation of old facades. The new facades highlights in practice SINTEF's vision of "technology for a better society". The rehabilitation is supported by Enova.
